Is it too early for the DeSean Jackson hype?

Last night's Eagles game was strange, to say the least. This game featured an hour long lightning delay in the first half and torrential downpours throughout the second half. Despite the strange weather, DeSean Jackson was able to put together his 2nd straight solid performance.

No, this isn't a high school kid, its the Eagles biggest deep threat

Jackson was far from perfect, but he did show some flashes of brilliance. He finished the game with 7 catches for 71 yards, an impressive 27 yard punt return and a key block on the game winning TD run. With Reggie Brown injured, DeSean made the most of his increased playing time. He also seems to have gained the confidence of his QB. McNabb appeared to look for Jackson on third downs, and for the most part, the two were successful. Jackson did have a few rookie mistakes, though. He seemed to slow up on a perfectly thrown deep ball by McNabb(which sailed just out of his reach), he dropped another 3rd down pass and he fumbled the ball on the tail end of that long punt return (luckily recovered by Schobel).

When the regular season rolls around, where will Jackson be on the depth chart? What role is he going to play on this team? Its becoming obvious that this guy has too much talent to keep on the sidelines. His gamebreaking ability alone should earn him some playing time. Its unlikely that he'll overtake a healthy Reggie Brown or Kevin Curtis in the starting lineup, but he deserves to be the third receiver (whether he actually plays in the slot or they bump Brown or Curtis inside). Avant has had a good preseason and the Eagles are still very high on Hank Baskett, but none of them will impact the game the same way DeSean will. He's the only receiver on this team that could be the playmaker that McNabb has been calling for.
